2015 Montgomery Norwich health statistics
Looking at a breed's national specialty gives a snapshot
on how a breed is doing with regards to health testing.
The vast majority of the dogs shown at a national specialty
will be breed and go on to have an effect on the gene pool.
(For example, of the Norwich entered in the 1997 Montgomery
national specialty, 86 percent were bred.)
1. Most dogs entered in a conformation show are too young
to have their hips tested. But one can look at their
parents to see if they have CHIC numbers. So define a
"CHIC dog" as one who either has a CHIC number, or both
parents have a CHIC number.
Of the Norwich entered in any class leading to the Best in
Breed designation at our Montgomery national specialty,
54 percent were "CHIC dogs". This is up from 2014
Before anyone gets too excited about the increase, I will
point out that the Border terriers at their 2014 national
specialty had an entry of 77 percent CHIC dogs. And then
there are the Dalmatians who had 80 percent CHIC dogs at
their 2014 national specialty.
Unfortunately, 54 percent CHIC Norwich did not meet my
challenge of "more than 55 percent".
2. Of the Norwich entered in any class leading to the Best
of Breed designation, 28 percent had a known PLL-status.
This is a slight increase from 2014 (25 percent).
Interestingly of the Norwich whose PLL-status was known,
21 percent were PLL-clear by descent. This demonstrates
that DNA testing need only be a "one-time" expense if one
is careful to only breed "clears" to "clears".
I have listed the "PLL dogs" below.
Unfortunately, 21 percent did not meet my challenge of
"above 35 percent".
3. There are so few Norwich whose DM-status is known, that
it was not worth calculating the "DM dogs" at Montgomery.
I will remind eveyone that OFA recommends that every breed
use the DM DNA test.
My 2016 Montgomery challenges
Since I did not have to pay on any of my 2015 Montgomery
challenges, I will "double down" on the CHIC challenge.
For Norwich entered in any class leading to the Best of
1. I will pay $200 to the AKC/CHF Norwich DAF if the
percent who are "CHIC dogs" - either have a CHIC number
or both parents have a CHIC number - is above 60 percent.
2. I will pay $100 to the AKC/CHF Norwich DAF if the
percent whose PLL-status is known is above 35 percent.
3. I will pay $100 to the AKC/CHF Norwich DAF if the
percent of Norwich whose DM-status is known is above
